I purchased this piece from the estate sale of a former gallerist and great collector on Newbury Street in Boston that included an endless array of wonderful things

giving the piece a great  sweetness and tenderness

I only occasionally come across sphere shaped boxes like this one, and snatch them up whenever I do; just such a satisfying form, and pretty handy too. There is a bit of a tendency of round boxes like this to warp as the wood expands and contracts; this one fits together nicely at the moment, but if it is very humid it might need a quick pop in the freezer to correct a bit of expansion.
