It recognises the extraordinary bravery and endurance of those who protected vital supply routes across the treacherous North Atlantic between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945

Following the 1993 review the MM was discontinued and the MC became available to all ranks of all services for exemplary gallantry on land in presence of the enemy
