The Arctic Star was awarded for operational service north of the Arctic Circle between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945

On 19th October 1919 the King announced the award of a clasp with the dates 5th Aug-22nd Nov 1914 to those that had actually served under fire between those dates

Instituted in 1918 at the same time as the AFC this was to reward NCO's and men of the RAF for courage or devotion to duty whilst flying but not in operational areas

at the same time the qualifying criteria was amended and applied to OR's as well (from 1st October 2016 for OR's)
